Impelled by an innate desire to give practical shape to the educational needs of the youth of this hoary land the celebrated Philonthropist, our beloved founder Dr.RM.Alagappa Chettiar founded this institution in June 1950 and the college was appropriately inaugurated by that doyen among educationists Dr.C.Ramachandra Reddy, the then Pro-Chancellor of Mysore University. The Silver Jubilee of the campus was celebrated under the presidenship of our former Prime Minister Smt.Indra Gandhi on 19th September 1975. When Alagappa University was formed in 1985 this institution became a constituent college of this university. It is indeed a matter of pride that the institution during the past 53 years has trained nearly 5300 teachers with unique equipment in the ramification of education and instructional technology. This institution has contributed intellectuals of high calibre, some of them have become the Vice-Chancellors of Universities. Majority of our students have taken up teaching in rural areas in the erswhile Ramnad District and have developed their institution to places of excellent learning. Many of the teachers have been coreted with National Awards and State Awards for being the Best Teacher or Best Headmaster. Realing the importance of teacher education the moral authority NCTE came into existence and has been visiting our institution periodically. Our College was given recognition by NCTE.
Inaugurated by Dr.C.Ramachandra Reddy, the then Pro-Chancellor of Mysore Universiy.
CALL OF THE STATE
Dr.Alagappa Chettiar Training College was started
to meet an unprecedented situation that developed in Madras State consequent
on the opening of a very large number of high schools under private and
other agencies. This has, resulted in the creation of a great demand for
trained teachers. The Department of Education in Madras State lost no time
taking measures to meet the situation and promised to give adequate support
and financial aid to Training Colleges that may be started by private managements.
The first to respond to the call of the State in the solution of the vital
problem was Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar. With his usual generosity and readiness
to help all good causes, he agreed to opening of a Training College at
Karaikudi when Sri D.S. Reddy, then Director of Public Instruction, visited
Karaikudi. The application for affiliation was made to the University of
Madras in October 1949, and the university granted provisional affiliation
for a period of three years from June 1950 with a maximum strength of 50
trainees.
APPLICATION AND AFFILIATION
The
Dr. Alagappa Chettiar Training College stands the second educational institution
founded in the Alagappa Campus at Karaikudi. It required no effort to get
a worthy idea translated into immediate action at the hands of Dr. Alagappa
Chettiar. The suggestion of Sri D.S. Reddi, Director of Public instruction,
Madras, when he visited the Alagappa College on 2nd September 1949 that
Chettiar might open a Training college to man the increasing number of
secondary schools and a general appeal made by Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar,
Vice- chancellor, on the need more colleges, evoked immediate response
from Dr. Chettiar whose philanthropy is ever in quest of worthy cause.
There was no long interval between the suggestion and its fulfilment. The
application for affiliation of the Dr. Alagappa Chettiar Training College
was submitted to the University of Madras on 19.10.1949. On 27.2.1950 the
University Inspection Commission consisting of Sri A.N. Thambi and Sri
T.K. Narayana Menon visited the campus and inspected the sire, accommodation
arrangements, and other resources for the proposed Training College; and
on their recommendation, the University communicated on 8.5.1950 the decision
of the Syndicate that provisional affiliation be granted for a period of
three years. Between this date and the actual opening of the college on
7-7-1950, a team of qualified staff both adequate and suitable was appointed,
the necessary equipment was ordered, and temporary accommodation was provided
in the Mathematics Block of the Alagappa Arts College Sri I.N.Menon, M.A.,
B.Litt. (Oxon), Retired Director of Public instruction, Travencore- Cochin,
took charge as the principal of the college. The college commenced work
with the full compliment of 50 students sanctioned by the University. The
college was officially inaugurated by Dr. C. R. Reddi, the then Pro – Chancellor,
Mysore University on 27.7.1950.
DEVELOPMENT AT THE EARLY STAGE
In
the absence of a Model High School Practice teaching had to be conducted
in High Schools in and around Karaikudi. In July 1957 the College moved
to its own premises where temporary sheds had been put up to house it.
The management started a Model High School on 4/7/1951 and the strength
of college was raised to 70. When Prof. I.N. Menon left the college Prof.
S.Srinivasan, Vice Principal of the Alagappa College was transferred to
act as the Principal of the Training College on 25.6.52. In the third year
the college has pucca permanence building. At the end of the fourth year
Prof. S.Srinivasan, Principal of the college returned to his substantive
post at the Alagappa College and Sri.P.Doraikannu Mudaliar took charge
as Principal on 6.7.54 Prof. S.Thiruvenkatachari, the Senior Professor
of the College in response to an invitation by the United States Educational
Foundation in India undertook a study tour in the USA for 15 months and
rejoined the college on 20.10.55. In 1955 – 56 on a representation by the
Management the University approved an increase in strength to 100. From
June 1957 the college was made co-educational with a view to providing
training facilities for women graduates. The Training College and the Model
High School stand in a big campus of 17 acres. The colleges and now an
Administrative Block housing the Principal’s room, the office, the Library
– cum – reading room, room for women students and the Department of In
service Education on the ground floor and the General Lecture Hall on the
first floor. The Block was opened on 4.8.57 by the Honourable C.Subramaniam,
the then Minister for Education, Madras. The spacious Auditorium-cum-Recreation
Hall was declared open on 10.7.61. Dr. S. Thiruvenkatachari, Senior – Professor
of the College and a distinguished educationists took charge as Principal
on September 3, 1967 on the sad demise of the then Principal, Sri P.Doraikannoo
Mudaliar. The strength of the College has risen to 122 with the approval
of the Madras University.

COURSES
The
college now offers B. Ed., course in the following optional subjects:
Tamil
The
course in Natural Science was introduced in 1965 – 66 and the course in
Early Childhood Education was introduced in 1972 – 73. M.Ed., course introduced
in the year 1978-99 with the enrolment of 14 students by the strenuous
effort of Dr. R. Pavanasam, the Principal. The raise and fall in the strength
of the M.Ed., students in the following years indicates the response of
the students towards this regular course. Most of the old students of the
institution and the teachers in the service neglected the regular course
and joined in the correspondence course during these years. In addition
to that they are not willing to take dissertation as a part of the fulfilment
of the course. Such an attitude of the students reveals the decline of
the strength in the M.Ed., course. The Commerce Education was introduced
in the year 1995 – 96.

as it was bound, that it was not possible to run the mess section as cheaply
as the larger Hostels. On account of small strength, loding provided from

TEACHER TRAINEES
The
sanctioned strength in 1950 was 70. In 1953-54 the strength was further
raised to 75. From 1955-56 the strength was still further raised to 100
in order to cope up with the demand for admissions. To meet the acute demand
for seats from women students the Madras University accorded permission
for the college in 1957 to admit 20 women students out of the sanctioned
strength of 100. The college prepares candidates 100 in number (80 men
and 20 women) for the B.T. Degree Examination of the Madras University.
In 1959 the strength of women students was further raised to 30. The students
strength (men 70+women 30) was maintained up to the year 1984-85.
After
the college becomes a constituent college of Alagappa University admission
procedure changed. Admissions are given on the basis of merit and communal
system. So that the strength of the students was varied year by year from
1985-86 to 1997-98 i.e., from 114 to 160. In the year 1998-99 onwards-National
council for Teacher Education (NCTE) insisted the strict rules and regulations
on admission and academic activities of the training colleges in India.
So that the strength of the student was controlled to 120 from the year

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
A
ten days camp for the BT Trainees is a regular course of training in citizenship.
The camps undertook certain item of community work besides the college
union. Each department of studies has its own association. Every year the
secretary of the associations will submit the reports of their activities
separately.
Among
their activities the most important were two surveys conducted by the teacher
trainees in 1953 – 54. The first was an enquiry in to the modified scheme
of Elementary Education on basis of a questionnaire prepared under the
guidance of Dr.B.B.Dey who was member of the committee appointed by the
Government of Madras to report on the working of the scheme. The second
survey is of community survey conducted by them at Elamanan in Tiruchirapalli
students of the college participated in batches in Adult Education centres
run by Karaikudi Municipality.
In
the year 1972 – 73 the college did not organise any social service programme
on account of its special set up and the shortness of the duration of the
course; but the students carried out a few items of social and community
work in connection with scouting. A few of the talented students acted
as Judges in high school competitions and also accepted speaking engagements
without prejudice to their work the Teachers Day, the Navy Day, the Human
Rights Day, the Children’s Day, the Independence Day and Republic day.
The associations are very much more than the conventional extra curricular
appendage, and transact a lot of serious purposeful business.
The
following association functioned during the year 1980 – 81 the association
of Educator is consisting of all students and members of the staff. The
college celebrated important days like the teacher’s day, the navy day,
the Human Rights day and Children’s day besides the Independence Day and
the Republic Day.
In
the year 1983 – 84 the college union celebrated important days like the
Teacher’s day, UN Day, the Human Rights Day and Children’s Day besides
the Independence Day and the Republic Day. The subject associations registered
a splendid work during the year. All the associations attended to purposeful
business.
